Andrew Perez earned medalist honors for the second straight time on Monday and the SBCC men’s golf team extended its lead in the WSC race, despite finishing third in WSC No. 8 at Rio Bravo CC in Bakersfield.
Ventura won the title with 372 strokes, followed by Bakersfield (374) and the Vaqueros (380). After starting the day tied with Canyons, SBCC (45-11) took a two-game lead over Ventura and Canyons (43-13) in the eight-team conference battle.
Perez had seven birdies for the second straight round and shot a 3-under 69 to share the medalist award with Alton Anderson of Ventura. It was the fifth medalist honor of the year for Perez, a former Santa Barbara High star who’s averaging 71.0 in 14 rounds.
Matt Siporin shot 73 and Albert Corral carded a 78 but the rest of the Vaqueros didn’t break 80.
“Andrew and Matt played well but we needed one other good score to be in contention,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “We didn’t get a real consistent effort.”
SBCC will compete in WSC No. 9 on Wednesday at Robinson Ranch in Santa Clarita.
