Andrew Perez went low on Thursday at Glendora CC and his SBCC golf teammates followed as the Vaqueros ran away from the field in WSC Meet No. 7.
Three days after shooting their highest score of the year (398), the Vaqueros recorded a 372 to finish 17 strokes in front of Ventura and Bakersfield. It was their sixth title in 12 tourneys this season.
Perez, a freshman sensation from Santa Barbara High, had seven birdies and two bogeys en route to a 5-under 67. It was the lowest round by a WSC player in three years at Glendora, which measures nearly 6,600 yards from the blue tees.
He would have matched his season-best of 66 if he hadn’t bogeyed the 18th hole.
Perez earned medalist honors for the fifth time this year and helped propel SBCC back into first place in the WSC race. The Vaqueros and Canyons are tied at 40-9, four games ahead of Ventura.
“Our guys came in with an attitude that they wanted to re-assert themselves,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “Andrew’s 67 was awesome and inspired everyone. He was very aggressive — that’s his game.”
Matt Siporin shot 74 for SBCC, Albert Corral had a 76, Charley Cerchiai carded a 77 and Cameron Tennant shot 78. The Vaqueros were playing their fourth round in four days.
“I’m glad we pulled out of our funk,” said Melendez, whose team won for the first time in five tournaments. “It’s nice to win by a big margin.”
SBCC returns to action on Monday in WSC No. 8 at Bakersfield.
