The 90th Russell Cup saw Oak Park take the grand sweepstakes with a total score of 307 on Saturday, headlining Carpinteria High School’s annual event that draws hundreds of the region’s top track athletes.
Oak Park finished 3rd in the varsity boys, 2nd in the varsity girls and 1st in both the frosh/soph girls and boys.
The host Warriors finished down the list of the 50 schools that brought athletes, but made a good showing in the girls triple jump. Caitlin Wallace, who also finished 6th in the high jump, finished third with a mark of 32 feet and a half an inch. Amanda Burch came in fifth at 31-04 1/2.
Carpinteria’s Evan Stanford was also jumping for the Warriors, but at a much higher level. His vault of 12 feet was good for fifth.
The Condor League schools posted some good results. Cate’s Sara Hetyonk was 3rd in the high jump at 5 feet and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 52.88. Teammate Nick Bern recorded a 6th in the 400-meter boys race in a fraction over 52 seconds and fifth in the 800.
Laguna Blanca’s state-qualifying long-distance runner Kevin Lunn competed in the 800 and 1600-meter races and placed sixth in the 1600.
