Morgan knocks down UCSB record in split

Senior utility player Gillian Morgan broke the No. 15 UCSB’s single season scoring record on Saturday as the Gauchos split a pair of games at No. 14 Cal State Northridge. UCSB (13-9, 0-3) fell to host Northridge (15-15, 2-1) in a Big West Conference game by way of a 10-6 score before defeating non-conference opponent Cal Baptist, 15-10, later in the day.

During the first game of the day against Northridge, the Matadors posted three consecutive goals to jump out to a 3-0 lead with 3:07 to go in the first quarter. Katie Kepner posted the lone Gaucho goal of the quarter to put UCSB on the board with 1:55 left in the quarter.

Kathryn Nelson scored a little over two minutes into the second, cutting the Matador lead to one goal, but CSUN fought back and goals from Allison Pierce and Renee Garigulo stretched the lead to 5-2. Lizzie Rouleau scored with 2:53 on the clock in the first half, but during the next possession, Whitney Delgado tallied one to give Northridge a 6-3 lead at half.

Kepner was the only player to score in the third period, cutting UCSB’s deficit to two goals heading into the final eight minutes of play. Just 30 seconds into the fourth period, Morgan scored her first goal of the day, bringing her season total to 61 goals, which tied Kelley Tiffany’s single season scoring record.

With UCSB trailing by just one, Rouleau tallied her second goal of the game, tying things up at six apiece with 6:21 left on the clock. Unfortunately for the Gauchos, the Matadors poured on four unanswered goals to capture the 10-6 victory.

Gaucho goalkeeper Chelsea Carrillo tallied seven saves in the loss while Northridge’s goalie, Jillian Stapf, had 14.

During the second game of the day against Cal Baptist, UCSB jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter off of a hat trick from Morgan and a goal from Alisha Khan. Cal Baptist’s Ashleigh Rood scored the lone Lancer goal of the quarter with 39 seconds left on the clock.

Both teams scored four goals in the second quarter with Morgan and Cal Baptist’s Jennifer Grutz and Melissa Shepardson posting two apiece. Leading 8-5 after the first half, UCSB shut out CBU in the third period as Morgan, Amanda TiptonClaire Buchanan and Elle Quaneeach scored once.

Cal Baptist outscored UCSB 4-3 in the final quarter, but the damage had already been done and the Gauchos came away with the 15-10 victory, snapping their three-game losing skid.

Quane scored two goals in the fourth; giving her a season-high hat trick in the win and Morgan led all players with six goals. Carrillo posted six saves for UCSB.

UCSB will continue Big West action next Saturday, April 11 at UC Irvine. The Gauchos and Anteaters will face off at noon.
