Emily Mason made a first-inning run hold up for the San Marcos girls softball team, notching her first career shutout in a 1-0 Channel League victory at Ventura.
The Royals have now won three in a row and improve to 5-6 on the season, 2-2 in league.
Kelly Martyniuk scored the Royals’ lone run after walking, then stealing second. She reached third on a grounder and scored when Kelly McKay’s groundball slipped through the legs of Ventura’s third baseman.
San Marcos won the game despite recording only one hit.
Mason didn’t need any more, not allowing a Cougar baserunner to make it past second base.
Head coach Alex Sheldon credited his defense with making some big-time plays, notably Cady Haskell at third base and Natalie Williams as second. Haskell had nine assists at the hot corner and Williams made a run-saving diving stop in the fourth inning to preserve the slim lead.
