Billy Grokenberger and Chase Melton defeated Jared Belsher and Matt Will 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 16 at the Griggs Cup in Ojai Friday to keep Santa Barbara High alive in the boys CIF doubles bracket. The team then went on to down Costa Mesa’s Charlie Alvarado and Corona del Mar’s Omeed Ghassemi 6-1, 6-3 to make the semifinals.
Next up is the second-seeded duo of John Huang-Michael Tang.
Ryan Sweeney, SBCC’s No. 1 singles player, was eliminated from the tournament in the third round on Friday morning, losing to Thomas McGee of Ohlone 6-2, 6-4.
Earlier this week, Sweeney earned an at-large berth to the Southern Cal Individual Regional on April 30-May 2 at Long Beach City College. He and Elliot Markowitz will play doubles at the regional, along with teammates Alex Zazove and Zack Scott.
SBCC’s Meghan Schaefer extended Arina Polovnikova of Palomar to three sets before falling 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 on Friday in the Community College women’s draw.
Schaefer lost in the Round of 32 in both singles and doubles. She and Carla Dauden were eliminated by Brittanie Miller-Krystle Tran of Sierra 6-1, 6-1.
