Gerow, Field are low men in Dons’ clincher

Ray Gerow was yin and Mason Field yang on Wednesday at Montecito Country Club, as the playing partners matched each other with one-under 70s to lead the Santa Barbara boys golf team to a 357-401 Channel League victory over Buena.

While Gerow played two over on the front and three under on the back, Field was the opposite, getting to 3-under at the turn before losing two strokes on the back nine.

Either way, they both led the Dons to their best round at Montecito yet this year. Shane Lebow and Jack Perry carded even-par rounds of 71 and Mickey Kirby scored a 75.

Cody Stewart was low-man for the Bulldogs with a 78.

Dons head coach James Bedard said it was a positive showing and good confidence boost after Tuesday’s struggles against San Marcos when Santa Barbara shot a 397 at Rancho San Marcos.

The team victory clinches the league title outright for Santa Barbara, which seeks its second-straight undefeated Channel League season on Thursday at Dos Pueblos.  The Channel League championships are just around the corner, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at Soule Park in Ojai.
