DP charges through the wind for a 12-6 win

Liz Frech seems to always look a little deeper than the final score when talking about her DP boys tennis team, and that was certainly the case in the Chargers’ 12-6 win over visiting Ventura Thursday, which was played in howling wind that sent the ball flying everywhere.

“When nature intervenes we learn a lot of lessons, particularly about having patience, rolling with the changing conditions and staying focused,” she said.

Sasha Gryaznov stayed focused enough to take down ranked-opponent Michael Lowe 6-3 in a big first-round match. Jack Kessel battled the wind on the upper courts and “painted the lines” to win his set 6-4.

Malcolm Sutton and Jake Roberts lost only four games en route to a 3-0 performance in doubles, while Peter Shao and Eric Katz won a pair.

Frech also expressed her appreciation for the Charger subs, who came in and tallied a total of four sets on the day..

“I appreciate those who subbed in today,” she said. “They had to wait for some time before playing, yet each one maintained a positive attitude and waited patiently.”

DP is now an impressive 11-2 overall and 5-1 in the Channel League, while Ventura falls to 5-6, 1-4.
