Santa Barbara High swept all nine doubles sets Thursday in a 13-5 boys tennis win at Dos Pueblos.
Chris Grant and Adrian Huffard won the closest doubles set of the day by beating Chargers Eric Zmolek and Peter Shao 6-4, and Dons coach Steve Geremia said that it was the most pivotal set of the match.
“That was the key match of the day because it swung the numbers in our favor. DP is a good team and they played well. It was 4-2 at the end of the first round and 9-3 after the second… But in doubles, we were just a little deeper and it showed,” he said.
Sasha Gryaznov swept his singles sets for DP while Christian Edstrom and Richard Cheng each picked up a frame.
It was a heavy-hearted day for the Dons, as many of the older players on the team were friends of Adrianna Bachan, a 2008 graduate of SBHS who was struck and killed while crossing the street down at USC last week. A handful of players on the Dons tennis team attended Bachan’s funeral on Wednesday.
“It was a tough week for the whole school. Just about all of our older players knew her because she was involved in so many different activities at the school,” said Geremia.
Dos Pueblos hosts San Marcos to resume Tuesday’s rained-out matchup.
