Dons can’t handle Redhead’s big bat in loss

Dante Redhead mashed three homers and drove in seven runs Wednesday to lead Deer Valley past Santa Barbara High 11-4 in the Righetti Tournament. Redhead, who will play at the University of San Francisco next year, hit a pair of 3-run bombs and a solo shot, with two of the round-trippers coming on two-strike counts.

Jack Crummer hit a homer in the third inning for the Dons (7-6), but it wasn’t enough to save sophomore hurler Danny Zandoza (5-1) from suffering his first loss.

“It wasn’t our pitching or hitting so much as that we weren’t as prepared as we should have been,” said assistant coach Mike Cooney. “We talked about working on preparation when facing good teams like this.”

The Dons face a tough Royal squad on Thursday.
