Chargers fend off Pirate invasion in sweep

Jordon Dyer, Cody Zoesch and Brian Schoneberger each picked up seven kills as the Dos Pueblos boys volleyball team picked up a 25-14, 25-20, 25-20 win over UCLA-bound Jon Bridgeman and the visiting Santa Ynez Pirates on Tuesday.

“It was a nice all-around game and we neutralized Bridgeman. He’s the real deal but we put up a nice block against him and played good defense,” said Chargers head coach Chris Hughes.

Zoesch and Schoneberger each added four blocks while Cole Arutian and Tim Baxter combined for 10 digs. Hughes said that it was great to see longtime Santa Ynez coach Chip Fenenga back on the bench after recent surgery in his ongoing battle with cancer.

But there was no sympathy when it came to the volleyball, as Fenenga’s Santa Ynez dynasty perenially crushed Channel League teams up until recent years.

“I’ve been beaten by Chip many, many times,” noted Hughes.

The Chargers (10-3) open up this weekend’s Tournament of Champions with Thousand Oaks on Friday.
