Chargers a little too challenging for Royals

The Dos Pueblos boys tennis team followed through with a 13-5 Channel League victory over San Marcos, completing a match on Monday that was suspended because of rain last Tuesday.

Sasha Gryaznov, Christian Edstrom and Austin Cano swept nine sets for the Chargers, who also got three sets from the doubles team of Jake Roberts and Peter Shao to clinch it.

San Marcos (5-6, 2-3) definitely didn’t turn belly up to the second place Chargers (9-2, 4-1). Six sets were lost by just a single break and the Royals fought back from two big deficits to win.

Jackson Mann and Scott Messier climbed out of a 0-5 hole to win a set in a tiebreaker and Parker Funk-Garret Timmons also engineered a fine comeback, taking a tiebreak win after being down 1-4. Both teams won two sets on the day.

“I haven’t seen a 5-0 comeback in my eight years of coaching,” said Royals head coach Jarrod Bradley of Mann and Messier’s turnaround.

Shao and Roberts won their sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 for Dos Pueblos and John Kim and Richard Cheng were on the wrong end of some close sets.

The Chargers visit Santa Ynez on Wednesday while the Royals have an off-day before traveling to Buena on Thursday.
