Joe Gottwald racked up 23 kills on Wednesday but Cate coach Dan Terry felt as if the referees racked up just as many errors in the Rams’ 25-18, 26-24, 20-25, 20-25, 15-13 boys volleyball loss at Fillmore.
“It was actually the worst refereeing I’ve ever seen. It wasn’t one-sided, though. It was generally bad on both sides,” he said.
Isaac Thompson had 32 assists with three aces and four blocks for Cate (2-2, 1-1 Condor League) and libero Ray Canseco had 16 digs and four aces. Gottwald had eight aces at the service line.
The Rams had a 24-20 lead in the second before giving up six straight points to lose the set. There wa controversy on a few occasions during the match where Terry said Cate was called falsely for a rotation error. One of Cate’s players told the coach that an official said to him “You can build rockets at Cate but you can’t keep a line-up.”
Regardless, Terry says his team is primed to advance to the postseason out of the new-look Condor League — and hopefully beat rival Laguna Blanca in the process.
