Young Royals come up just short in opener, 10-8

San Marcos went 8-1 in doubles sets but lost two singles matches by just one break in Tuesday’s season-opening 10-8 boys tennis loss to visiting Camarillo.

“We’re fine in doubles. I’ve been here for eight years now and I’ve put a lot of time into doubles because it can have a huge impact on a match,” said coach Jarrod Bradley. “We just don’t have a lot of experience in singles play.”

The Royals started six sophomores, two juniors and a senior in the match, and sophomore Travis Enholm showed promise at the top singles spot despite going winless. Five out of the Royals’ nine player were not on varsity last year.

The doubles pairings of Sean-Michael Gaudefroy-Scott Messier and Stephen Amspoker-Jackson Oster each went 3-0 for San Marcos, which plays at Valencia Friday.
