Vaquero spikers can’t seal the deal

SBCC stayed with Long Beach City for most of Friday night’s WSC men’s volleyball match but had trouble finishing in a 30-21, 30-24, 30-28 setback. The Vaqueros dropped their third straight match to fall to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in conference.

“We played well in all three games until the 20-point mark,” said coach Melody Parker. “Our setter (Jacob Denitz) didn’t show up until the end of the second game and he didn’t play due to a family matter.”

Justin Conmy filled in and handed out 27 assists. Tyson Rietz was the kill leader with 15, followed by Mark Hebda with 10. Jim Wielebnicki had 12 digs.

It was the seventh sweep of the year for Long Beach (8-1, 2-0).

The Vaqueros led in all three sets, including 25-23 in the third set. “We’re working on some new offensive plays and we need to polish those off,” Parker added.

After playing its last four matches on the road, SBCC returns home on Wednesday for a 6 p.m date with Santa Monica.
