Siporin takes Vaqueros to fifth title in seven tries

Freshman Matt Siporin shot his second straight 1-under 71, guiding the SBCC men’s golf team to its fifth title in seven tournaments on Monday at the Canyons Invitational.

Siporin shared medalist honors in the 18-team tourney at Wood Ranch CC in Simi Valley. He topped a field of 108 players, along with Davis Kirkland of Canyons and Len Garcia of Hancock.

The Vaqueros shot a season-high 381 and still finished six strokes ahead of Canyons and eight ahead of Long Beach City. Andrew Perez turned in a 75, Steve Wilson and Thomas Richards added 78s and Philip Lea shot 79 for SBCC, which improved to 79-2.

“It was a quality win,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “The round took seven hours. The conditions were tough — it was a very difficult course and we played from the back tees. The fairways were narrow and it was windy.”

The event featured the top teams in Southern California and Melendez said he thought the victory would vault the No. 2-ranked Vaqueros back over Palomar (7th place) into the top spot in the Southern Cal rankings.

SBCC will play WSC No. 4 on Monday at Tierra Rejada in Moorpark.
