Strong winds sent scores soaring on Monday as the SBCC men’s golf team recorded a season-high 383 while finishing third in WSC Meet No. 4 at Tierra Rejada GC in Moorpark. The Vaqueros ended up just two shots behind the winner, Ventura, and one behind Canyons.
“The story of the day was the wind,” said Vaquero coach Chuck Melendez, whose team has won five of eight tournaments this year. “It was gusting to 50 mph and changing direction a lot.”
SBCC (25-3) remained in first place in the WSC, two games ahead of Canyons (23-5). Steve Wilson led the Vaqueros with a 74 while Andrew Perez and Charley Cerchiai carded 75s. Hancock’s Levi Garcia was the medalist at 2-under 70.
“The guys in the back — Steve Wilson and Charley Cerchiai — did a great job of picking us up on a day when our top guys weren’t playing their best,” noted Melendez.
SBCC returns to action on Monday in WSC No. 5 at Brookside GC in Pasadena.
