Amanda Sharp had a pair of RBI singles in a 5-4 second-game win on Tuesday at Pershing Park as the SBCC softball team gained a WSC split with Oxnard. The Condors won the first game 1-0 on a six-hitter by Courtney Checky.
Sharp and pitcher Lauren Gniadek were both 2-for-3 in the opener. SBCC hurt its cause by leaving eight on base, including five with runners in scoring position and one out or less.
“We couldn’t get the key hits, which was frustrating considering what we had done on Sunday (25 runs, 26 hits in 2 games) in our tournament,” noted coach Paula Congleton.
Sharp, Sierra Van Olphen and Lauren Takayesa each had two hits in the nightcap, helping SBCC improve to 9-20 overall and 5-10 in WSC play. The Vaqueros took a 3-0 first-inning lead in the second game on an RBI single by Sharp, a run-scoring fielder’s choic and an RBI double by Sonja Crawford.
After the visitors scored two in the third, SBCC extended the lead to 5-2 in the fourth on a single by Van Olphen, an RBI triple by Takayesu and a run-scoring single by Sharp. The Condors scored twice in the seventh before pitcher Gabby Garza got a groundout to second to end the game.
“The kids are showing good character,” said Congelton. “We could have fallen down and died after the first game. Our win-loss record doesn’t show what this team is made of. We’ve lost a lot of close games.
“They have great camaraderie and support each other. That’s what’s important.”
SBCC travels to Moorpark for another doubleheader on Thursday.
