San Marcos’ boys tennis team swept in doubles for the second consecutive match on Thursday to defeat Arroyo Grande 12-6.
“We played our best tennis of the year on the heels of our best tennis of the year,” said coach Jarrod Bradley. “Our doubles teams dominated at the net and from the service line.”
The Royals showed calm under pressure by winning all five sets that were decided by one break or less.
“I’m not sure we could have played the pressure points much better than we did,” said Bradley. “It seemed as if every duece or ad-out point we’d hit a big shot put the pressure back on AG.”
Sean-Michael Gaudefroy stepped in for top doubles player Scott Messier, who was ill, and joined Jackson Mann to sweep through the competition 6-4, 6-1, 6-2. Nik Kilpelainen and Parker Funk swept their doubles sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.
Jackson Foster and Stephen Amspoker completed the sweep at two doubles with a tiebreak win against the Eagles’ top team 7-6 (7-3) after winning 6-1 and 6-0 in their other sets.
The Royals (4-3) host Dos Pueblos in a big rivalry match on Tuesday. Arroyo Grande, which features two ranked singles players, is now 5-1.
