Doubles saved the day again for the San Marcos boys tennis team, as the Royals went 7-2 in the tandems Wednesday to pull out their second 10-8 victory in as many days, this time over visiting Santa Ynez.
Scott Messier and Jackson Mann went a perfect 3-0 and San Marcos’ other two doubles squads (Nick Kilpelainen-Parker Funk, Stephen Amspoker-Jackson Foster) were 2-1 on the afternoon. Coach Jarrod Bradley was particularly happy with Amspoker and Foster, the Royals’ No. 3 duo.
“They’re playing well. They have good serves and volleys, and they’re just versatile and powerful,” he said. “There’s a certain chutzpah on the court you can’t teach.”
For those not familiar with Yiddish, that means they have a gutsy, confident manner about them.
Sean-Michael Gaudefroy, Travis Enholm and Harrison Strober each picked up a win in singles. The Royals (2-0) travel to play a power-packed San Luis Obispo team Friday.
