Caleb Ibsen came off the bench and put away four kills as part of a solid all-around performance for San Marcos in Thursday’s 25-15, 25-20, 25-23 boys volleyball sweep of visiting Buena.
“We were excited because we were able to get all of our players into the match and see our depth,” said coach Roger Kuntz.
Andrew Grimes had 19 kills on just 37 swings, while Erik Holliday had five solo blocks. Johnny Manzo made his varsity debut and put away a kills, while Michael York and Will Hayward ran the Royals’ offense effectively, according to Kuntz.
The Royals (5-0, 1-0 Channel League) open the Best of the West Tournament in San Diego Friday, where they will aim to make it out of a pool which includes Long Beach Wilson, La Costa Canyon and San Clemente.
“We’d like to break out of the pool in first or second place. We have the firepower, so it will just be a matter of whether we can play a little defense,” said Kuntz.
