The great thing about track and field is that a lopsided dual meet can still have stellar individual performances on both sides, and that was certainly the case at San Marcos Friday. The Royals defeated Santa Barbara 98-29 in the girls meet and 93-23 on the boys side, but both the Dons and San Marcos had noteworthy wins on the afternoon.
Sophomore Elysia Hodges won the girls’ 200-meter (27.14) and 400-meter (1:01.04) races for San Marcos, and was also a member of the winning 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams. Keliah Castillo was a double-winner in the discus and shot put, and Christine Sienicki took both the triple jump and long jump.
Junior Jennifer Haden tallied five points for the Royals in the 800, winning by over eight seconds to finish in 2:30.88.
“I felt really good in the race and feel optimistic about this year. I sort of had an awakening in the offseason,” said Haden.
Rebecca Vail took home a big win for the Dons in the girls 100-meter race, clocking in at 13.88.
Santa Barbara’s R.J. Bisquera had a big day in the boys sprints, winning the 100 (11.78) and 200 (23.79). San Marcos’ Elden Gil, who finished second to Bisquera in the 200, won a close race in the 400, edging Santa Barbara’s Freddy Maldonado by just a half-second with a winning mark of 52.66.
Bisquera said that even though competition will be tough, he hopes to end up the county champion in both the 100 and 200.
Wrestling standout Jason Stevens is new to his events, but showed his all-around athleticism by winning the 110 (17.07) and 300 (44.73) hurdles.
Shane Rowen impressed everyone over in the sand, dominating the triple jump with a winning mark of 40-feet, one-inch. It was a personal-best by a whopping four feet for the San Marcos sophomore, who said he is hoping to reach 43-feet by the end of the season.
Tyler Parent, an aspiring decathlete, took the shot put (39-04) and discus (129-09) for the Dons while taking third in the high jump, which San Marcos’ Nate Reed won with a successful attempt at the 6-foot mark.
Cross-country stars Evan Bradford of San Marcos and Briggs Deardorff of Santa Barbara seperated themselves from the pack and had a pair of great showdowns in the distance races. Bradford won both, taking the 1600 in 4:35.8 and the 3200 in 10:06.99.
“We’re in a new place this year because about 80-percent of our athletes are sophomores and juniors. We’ve been very pleasantly surprised so far,” said Royals coach Marilyn Hantgin.
San Marcos has more than twice as many athletes as Santa Barbara in track and field. The Dons were actually the hosts of the event, but do not have the proper facilities.
“I think we picked up some really good early season marks and we’ll go from there,” said Santa Barbara coach Olivia Perdices.
