Royals blow up for 11 runs against Pacifica

The San Marcos baseball team exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning on the way to the Royals’ first victory of the season, a 11-0 drubbing at Pacifica on Wednesday in continuing play in the Southern California Invitational.

After scoring only one run in each of their season-opening two losses, the Royals plated 11 runs in the game, shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

Alex Price got things going for San Marcos (1-2) in the third inning, leading off with a single. Brandon Atelian drove in Price two at-bats later and Victor Acevedo promptly knocked in Atelian with another single.

All 10 San Marcos hits were of the one-base variety, including two more RBI singles in the third thanks to Andy McCumber and Nick Stahopolous. In all, the Royals sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning.

“Once guys starting hitting it became a little contagious,” said San Marcos coach Rob Crawford.

Pat Cavalier started on the mound for San Marcos and combined with McCumber on a two-hit shutout.

“He pitched an awesome game,” said Crawford of his winning pitcher in Cavalier, who was in his first start of the year.

The Royals continue play in the Royal Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

On Wednesday, Atelian, McCumber and Stahopolous all recorded two hits each. Atelian added two RBIs and two runs scored. It was dueces wild for McCumber, who was 2-for-2 at the plate, scored two runs, walked twice and stole two bases. Acevedo stole three bases in three attempts.
