Tyson Rietz recorded a season-high 30 kills on Wednesday night at El Camino and SBCC won the first two sets before dropping a 3-2 men’s volleyball decision in its WSC debut. The Warriors won the match in Torrance 31-33, 20-30, 30-19, 36-34, 15-10.
“We were awesome in the first two games,” said coach Melody Parker, whose team was playing its first match in 11 days. “That was as good as we’ve played all year. In Game 4, we had match point about four times but couldn’t finish it.
“El Camino got better in the fourth and fifth games. We were pounding balls and they were getting everything.”
Chris Newcomb added 16 kills for SBCC (4-4, 0-1) while Jim Wielebnicki notched 20 digs in his team’s first five-set match of the year. Setter Jacob Denitz, a former Carpinteria High standout, returned from a broken foot and had 54 assists in his season debut.
“This is a young team and as they get more experience, they won’t let this happen again,” said Parker.
The Vaqueros will finish their four-match road trip at Long Beach City on Friday night.
