The Carpinteria baseball team opened up its season on Saturday with the traditional two-game set against Santa Ynez. The Pirates managed to edge the Warriors in both contests, 8-5 and 6-5, jumping on Carpinteria for three runs in the first inning of both games.
Carpinteria was sharp with the glove (1 fielding error in 2 games) and the bat (three home runs on the day), but head coach Pat Cooney said that several mental miscues were the difference in the close games.
Leadoff hitter Nathan Saito made the most noise at the plate for the Warriors, going 3-for-4 in both games, including a two-run homer in the second game. The senior also started the second game, recording five strikeouts.
Isacc Cervantes was the Warriors’ top RBI man, tallying three on the day. Kyle Geary pitched a complete game in the first game and homered in the sixth inning of the second.
“It was just a great day for baseball,” said Cooney, whose Warriors have played the Pirates on opening day in all 14 years he’s been the coach.
Carpinteria, which moved up to Division IV has its home opener next Saturday, a doubleheader with Cabrillo.
