Andrew Perez and the SBCC men’s golf team continued their solid play on Sunday with a five-stroke victory in WSC No. 2 at Marshallia Ranch on Vandenberg AFB.
Perez, a freshman from Santa Barbara High, fired a 3-under 69 to share medalist honors in the eight-team tourney with Matt Peich of Citrus. Matt Siporin shot 72 and ex-San Marcos High star Albert Corral added a 75 for the Vaqueros, who are a perfect 4-for-4 in tournaments this year.
SBCC finished at 14-over-par 374, beating Canyons and Citrus by five shots. They’re 14-0 in WSC play, two games ahead of Citrus and four in front of Canyons.
Perez, a two-time medalist this year, overcame a double-bogey on the front nine with four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 18th.
“His will to win is extremely strong,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “The course was tougher (than the previous match at Santa Maria CC where SBCC shot 2-under 358). When you get in trouble here, it’s tough to get out.”
With wins at the Bakersfield and Rio Hondo Invitationals plus two WSC victories, the Vaqueros have toppled 48 straight opponents.
“I didn’t think we’d win our first four tourneys, especially with the quality in our league,” noted Melendez. “I’m surprised we’re unbeaten.”
The Vaqueros will hit the links again today when they host WSC No. 3 at the Alisal Ranch Course in Solvang, starting at 11 a.m.
