San Marcos starting pitcher Sam Marshall went the distance for the Royals on Friday, but visiting Oxnard ultimately came out on top in a 2-1 decision at San Marcos that was the season’s first game for both teams.
Oxnard, ranked No. 8 in CIF Division I, scored runs in the fourth and fifth innings and allowed the Royals’ only run in the bottom of the fifth.
Down 2-0, the Royals tried to get back in it when Landon Boneck doubled in Shane Wieland from second base. It was the only time San Marcos was successful with runners in scoring position, as first-year coach Rob Crawford said his team left at least four runners in scoring position to end innings.
“Marshall pitched exceptionally well, so it was a little disappointing,” said Crawford, still pleased with the opening-day showing against a team of Oxnard’s caliber.
Boneck had two hits on the day and Max Cavalier smashed the Royals’ other extra-base hit while reaching base in all three of his plate appearances.
Marshall struck out two in his seven innings of work while not allowing a walk.
San Marcos continues play in the Royal Tournament (put on by Royal of Simi Valley) on Saturday with an 11 a.m. home game.
