Miscues define Vaqueros’ day

There weren’t many positives for SBCC in Thursday’s 13-6 WSC North baseball loss to Moorpark at Pershing Park. Six pitchers combined to walk six batters and hit five others while the Vaquero defense committed a season-high seven errors.

The Raiders (7-8, 3-1) broke open an 8-6 game with five runs in the eighth on two hits, three errors, a walk and a hit batter. Zack Chavez had pulled the Vaqueros (12-8, 1-3) within two on a two-out, two-run single in the seventh.

SBCC starter Jeremy Peterson only lasted 1 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on four hits with three walks, three wild pitches and a hit batter.

“I don’t really have an explantation,” said SBCC coach Teddy Warrecker. “I thought that mentally, we were prepared to play. Actually, if you look at the amount of hits we’re giving up (10 on Thursday), we’re giving up way more runs than the hits would indicate.

“We hit five guys, we walked six guys and you compound that with seven errors and it’s a recipe for disaster.”

Chavez, a former Santa Barbara High star, was 2-4 with two runs scored and Aaron Bauman knocked in two with a first-inning single. The Vaqueros, who dropped their second straight to Moorpark and their seventh game in nine outings, gave up thee runs in the fifth and another in the seventh to fall behind 8-3.

Moorpark’s Daniel Payne scored in the fifth when he was hit by a pitch, took second on a throwing error and scored on two wild pitches. The Vaqueros had five wild pitches with three leading to runs.

“And the wild pitches too,” said Warrecker. “Everything came at once today. All the things we could have done badly happened. Steven Keller swung the bat pretty well (with a couple of deep outs to left field) and we get our first spring wind at Pershing, blowing in from left.

“I thought (Tony) Cooper did a good job at third base (moving from second). We’re trying some (different) combinations right now. When you play three games in a week and it starts to go bad, it can go bad in a hurry.

“The silver lining is we still have a long way to go in league.”

The Vaqueros will send out Chad Caraccioli to start Saturday’s 1 p.m. home game against Ventura.
