Long Beach cuts off Gaucho streak

LONG BEACH – The Long Beach St. 49er’s were simply too much for the Gauchos to handle yesterday and the result was a 6-1 defeat. The loss ends the UCSB women’s tennis win streak at five as Long Beach posted their eight straight victory.

The Gauchos did make some noise early. After dropping second doubles 8-4, the Gauchos responded with a fantastic 8-5 win at No. 3. At that point, No. 1 doubles was battling in a 5-5 tie and a 30-0 lead in the game. However, UCSB could not get it done, losing 8-5.

The somewhat deflated Gauchos went down in straight sets in the first five singles matches. (Complete results listed below)

The lone bright spot of the day was the play of Junior Bryanna Ojeda. Bryanna posted an impressive 6-4, 6-2 win at No 6. With her win with partner Asagi Onaga in the doubles Bryanna was a double winner yesterday. Even more impressive is that Bryanna picked up wins against all three of the nationally ranked teams in our conference (#25 LBSU, #38 UCI, #75 CP).

With the loss, UCSB stands at 9-4 overall and 2-4 in Big West play. The Gauchos will try to rebound from the loss right against CS Fullerton Sunday at home. First serve will be at 1:00 PM.

*there will be a free junior clinic after the men’s and women’s matches with Dartmouth on Saturday March 21.
