Freshman James Height shot a 77 to earn medalist honors in his first high school golf match, leading Dos Pueblos to a 392-468 win over Oxnard on Thursday in windy conditions at Glen Annie Golf Course.
His classmates, Nick DeHeras (78) and Carson Curtis (79), also impressed coach Rob Schiff in their varsity debuts.
“That was pretty impressive today, to have three freshmen break 80 in a 3-club wind,” said Schiff.
The coach has a problem on his hands, but it’s a pleasant one — the team played six 9-hole qualifiers before the season began, and the 15 team members finished packed together like sardines. Curtis led the way with a 35.8 average, while the 15th-place player was at 42.
“We can only play six and I have to choose from those 15. I imagine some guys will separate themselves, but it’s a nice problem to have,” said Schiff.
The Channel League is power-packed this year, but Schiff said he thinks with the right lineup on the right day, the Chargers should be able to compete with anyone.
DP hosts Santa Ynez Friday.
