Grimes, Newton help Royals throw down Pirates

Blocking out Santa Ynez’s early challenge, the San Marcos boys volleyball team focused on the task at hand and came away from a visit to the Pirates’ gym with a 27-25, 26-28, 25-19, 25-20 victory on Wednesday night.

The Royals let a late game-two lead get away but head coach Roger Kuntz liked the way his 12-7 squad responded, closing out the match from there in relative ease behind Andrew Grimes’ 23 kills.

“That really woke us up,” said Kuntz of the lost set.

The Royals’ big men up front harassed Pirate hitters all night, recording 22 blocks as a team. Three different players tallied four each, but John Newton put down eight alone.

Kuntz also got steady play from setters Mike York and Erik Holliday as each dished out an equal 26 assists.
