The UCSB women’s tennis team captured the doubles point with ease and swept Santa Clara in singles at the Rob Gym Tennis courts Saturday to post its third win in its last match of the four game home-stand. With the win, the Gauchos improve to 12-5 overall (3-4 in Big West) while the Broncos drop to 7-9 on the season.
The Gauchos started off hot, winning the doubles point decisively at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots. The pair of Michelle Murphy and Sofia Novak rocked S. Galainena and M. Davoudi on court one, 8-1, while the duo of Jill Damion and Natalia Lozano posted an emphatic 8-4 win at the No. 2 slot over K Wagner and K. Cox, 8-4.
The momentum carried over for the Gauchos as Asagi Onaga was the first off the court with a 6-0, 6-1 pounding over K. Buckley on court five. Jill Damion rallied from 4-5 down in the second set to be next off with a 6-2,6-4 win. Natalia Lozano and Sofia Novak followed shortly after with straight set victories.
Michelle Murphy held on to win 6-4, 6-4 after being up 5-0 in the second set. Bryanna Ojeda finished off the sweep with a 6-2, 6-7,1-0 at No. 6.
The Gauchos will head to UC Riverside next Saturday to finish off their conference schedule. A win will clinch the No. 4 seed for the Big West tournament.
