Gauchos get 15th seed, draw Stanford

The Big West champion UCSB women’s basketball team will play Stanford in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, it was announced on Monday.

The Gauchos (22-9) are making their 14th consecutive postseason appearance after winning the Big West Tournament for the 11th time in the past 13 seasons.

UCSB received a No. 15 seed while Stanford (29-4) is the No. 2 seed in the Berkeley Regional. The game will be played at San Diego’s Cox Arena on Saturday, Mar. 21 at approximately 7:30 p.m. It will be televised on ESPN2 and fans in Santa Barbara can listen on KTMS 990 AM.

The winner will face either No. 7 DePaul or No. 10 San Diego State in Monday’s second round.

UCSB is making its 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and at a No. 15 seed, it is the Gauchos’ lowest seed in their history.

Entering the postseason riding a five-game win streak, UC Santa Barbara faces Stanford for the first time since the 2007 season. The Cardinal, who advance to postseason play after capturing both the Pac-10 regular season and tournament titles, owns a 9-1 advantage over the Gauchos. UC Santa Barbara’s lone win against Stanford was a 62-61 victory back in 1977.
