For the third time this past week, the UCSB men’s tennis team is one point shy of posting their fifth win of the season. A depleted Gaucho squad kept up in singles play, grabbing three of the six singles matches, but could not handle the Quakers in doubles to fall, 4-3.
The UCSB men were without the services of Josh Finkelstein and Scott Hohenstein. In their place, coach Marty Davis used Alex Gushner and Mathieu Forget. Both Gauchos gave UCSB a spark, winning their respective matches. Gushner took down Dmitry Bury, 6-4, 6-0, while Mathieu Forget sunk Justen Roth in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1. Alex Konigsfeldt picked up the third victory for the Gauchos at the No. 1 position, defeating Hicham Laalej, 7-6, 6-2.
The UCSB men’s run ended there as the Quakers took the next three singles matches. Jason Lin clinched the win for Penn, surpassing Devin Nerenberg on court four, 7-6, 6-2.
With the loss, UCSB falls to 4-8 on the season. The Gauchos will look to snap their three match-losing streak tomorrow when they clash with Yale on the UCSB Recreation Center courts tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
