Every stroke counts in Vaquero losses

The scenario was frustratingly familiar for the SBCC men’s golf team on Monday as the Vaqueros finished third — just two shots behind the winner — for the second straight WSC meet.

Canyons captured WSC No. 5 with a 9-over 369 at par-72 Brookside GC in Pasadena. Ventura, last week’s winner, was one shot back and SBCC was two behind at 371. The top six teams in the eight-team field were all within eight shots of each other.

After leading the entire season, SBCC is now tied for first with Canyons at 30-5. Ventura is third at 25-10.

“This is the deepest the league has been since I’ve been coaching,” said SBCC’s Chuck Melendez. “There’s a lot of talent out there. It only takes one errant shot to make the difference between first and third.”

Andrew Perez led the Vaqueros with an even-par 72. He was followed by Alex McElhaney (73), Charley Cerchiai (74) and Matt Siporin (75). Zack Kanny of Ventura was the medalist at 69.

SBCC will compete in WSC No. 6 on Monday at Saticoy CC in Somis.
