Moorpark broke open a 1-1 game with five unearned runs in the seventh and went on to beat SBCC 6-1 in a WSC softball game on Tuesday at Pershing Park. The Vaqueros (3-13, 1-6 WSC) committed four errors in the inning.
“They got a couple of hits and we made some errors throughout the inning,” said coach Paula Congleton. “Our shortstop is sitting back on the ball a little bit. We have to get her to charge it more and be more aggressive.”
Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, SBCC tied things up on a one-out single by Kellee Venturi, a walk to Sonja Crawford, a fielder’s choice and an RBI single by Bianca Alvarez. Venturi had two of the Vaqueros’ three hits.
Gabby Garza held the Raiders (13-6, 6-1), the first-place team in the Gold Division, to one run on five hits through six innings. SBCC drew nine walks from winning pitcher Bonnie Ward but could only cash one in. She walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh but Venturi flied out to right to end the game.
Congleton was hit in the knee by a sharp foul off a Moorpark player’s bat in the first inning. She returned to the third-base coaching box a few innings later.
“I have two knees now,” she said, pointing to the bump where the ball hit her left knee. “It’s going to be OK.”
The Vaqueros will play host to Bakersfield on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Saturday’s doubleheader, orginally scheduled for Pershing Park, has been moved to Rio Hondo in Whittier due to a scheduling problem.
