DP strategy gives Royals doubles-trouble

San Marcos hadn’t lost a doubles set in over a week, and Dos Pueblos coach Liz Frech was obviously aware of it.

Frech played her top two boys tennis players – Sasha Gryaznov and Christian Edstrom – in doubles pairings and it worked beautifully as the Chargers picked up a 15-3 win at San Marcos on Tuesday afternoon.“She finally let me play doubles, for the first time ever,” said a smiling Gryaznov, who went 3-0 with partner John Kim. “I didn’t really scout the other team or anything, but I just asked her and she said okay… I get to peg people in doubles, which is fun.”

Whether or not trying to “peg” your opponent is a reccomended strategy, it certainly seemed to work for him.

Edstrom and Malcolm Sutton went 3-0 in doubles for DP, as did Andy Silverstein and Eric Katz.

Top singles player Travis Enholm picked up two sets in singles play for the Royals while Sean-Michael Gaudefroy grabbed the other point for the hosts. Despite the loss, Enholm said San Marcos has been rounding into form nicely, especially since six starters – including himself – are sophomores.

“I think we’ve been playing prety well, actually. We just need to keep playing and improving like we’ve been doing and I think we’ll be fine,” he said.

Enholm almost swept his sets after rallying for three straight games to close the gap to 5-4 against Austin Cano, but fell short as Cano took all three of his singles matches.

San Marcos falls to 4-4, 1-1 in the Channel League while DP is 7-1, 3-0.
