Dons dismissed in final inning once again

Calabasas came up with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Santa Barbara boys baseball team 5-4 on Saturday in the Chatsworth Tournament, the second time in three games the Dons have been-victimized by walk-off losses.

Santa Barbara assistant coach Mike Cooney said the Dons had plenty of opportunities to avoid the tourney-opening setback, leaving 11 baserunners stranded, most in scoring position.

As an example, Jack Crummer, who’s been red-hot at the plate of late, reached base in all four of his at-bats but never scored. Crummer knocked two doubles on Saturday to make it 9 hits in his last 10 at-bats.

“It was a tale of us not taking advantage of the opportunities we had,” explained Cooney, whose young team falls to 2-3 on the season.

The Dons lost out to an undefeated San Luis Obispo team 7-6 earlier in the week.

Santa Barbara continues play in the Chatsworth tourney next Saturday but begins Channel League play in the meantime. Tuesday’s league opener against Ventura at Eddie Mathews Field.

Against Calabasas, Collin Dewell started on the mound for the Dons but made the most noise at the plate, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Cleanup hitter Joe Gonzales went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
