Sonja Crawford drilled a three-run homer in Thursday’s second game at Santa Maria, helping SBCC to an 8-5 victory and a split of its WSC softball doubleheader with Hancock. The Bulldogs won the opener 4-0, despite a six-strikeout, six-hit pitching effort by the Vaqueros’ Gabby Garza.
Sierra Van Olphen went 1-1 with three walks in the first game but the Vaqueros (6-14, 4-7) hurt their cause with five errors. Hancock’s Samantha Willoughby and Selina Gonzalez hit back-to-back homers to open the sixth inning. Gonzalez also had a grand slam in the second game.
In the nightcap, Sara Gurchinoff went 3-4 with two RBIs while Bianca Alvarez was 3-3 with two RBIs. SBCC took a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Kellee Venturi was hit by a pitch, Alvarez singled and Crawford, a former San Marcos High star, delivered her second homer over the 210-foot sign in left field. They added four more in the third to go up 7-0.
Bryanna Monelo (1-1) got her first win for SBCC.
“We were disappointed in the first game, we made too many physical errors,” said coach Paula Congleton. “In the second game, we played strong and were able to turn it around.”
The Vaqueros open play in the Bakersfield Classic on Saturday against Pasadena at 5 p.m.
