Correa, Gauchos win series over Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD – UC Santa Barbara (11-7) posted a 6-0 victory over Cal State Bakersfield (7-8) on Sunday afternoon at the Roadrunner Softball Complex, winning the three-game series against the Roadrunners. Sophomore pitcher Lindsey Correa pitched the complete game shutout for the Gauchos, allowing just two hits across the seven innings.

The Gauchos had split a doubleheader with Bakersfield on Saturday. UCSB won the first game 4-3 before falling 7-6 in nine innings during the second game.

At the top of the third inning on Sunday, Tiffany Wright hit a single up the middle with one out before Jessica Beristianos hit a triple to right center field sending home the first Gaucho run of the game. A single to left field from Amanda Ziegler during the next at-bat brought Beristianos home, giving UCSB a 2-0 lead.

Two innings later, Wright and Beristianos were able to reach on a pair of Roadrunner errors. Ziegler then walked, loading the bases with no outs for UCSB. Jackie Conlin followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing Wright home for the unearned run. Allison Taylor grounded out during the ensuing at-bat, allowing Beristianos score.

At the top of the sixth inning, Christine Ramos hit a single to left field and then moved to second when Jessica Ziegler grounded out to the shortstop. A two-out RBI single down the left field line from Wright stretched the Gaucho lead to 5-0. Beristianos followed with a RBI double to left center field to bring the score to 6-0. 

 
 

Wright went 2-for-4 with three runs and a RBI in the win. Beristianos went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, a double, a triple and a stolen base.

 

Correa (2-0) tossed a complete game for the Gauchos. She held the Roadrunners to just two hits, walked one and struck out four.

The Gauchos will be back in action on Friday, Mar. 6 when they head to the UNLV Invite where they will face host UNLV, Texas Tech and Notre Dame during the two-day event.

UCSB will open its 2009 home schedule on March 11 when they host San Diego in a doubleheader.
