Bishop Diego has set its sights on challenging for the Tri-Valley League boys volleyball title.
The Cardinals got their quest started on the right foot Thursday night, winning their league opener at Malibu, 25-13, 25-17, 29-31, 25-20.
“We’re trying to go for a league title this year,” Bishop coach Joe Reiken said. “The Tri-Valley League is extremely competitive with teams like Oaks Christian and Oak Park. We’re up on the same level as they are.”The Cardinals (4-1) will test themselves against both contenders next week at home.
Against Malibu, Vanderfin led the Bishop attack with 18 kills. Connor MacGillivray supplied eight blocks and Michael Schlesselmann and Robert Connolly combined for 38 digs. Schlesselmann, the team’s libero, led the way with 23.
Reiken said the back-row defense has stepped up as the team steadily improves on its blocking.
The Cardinals had everything working in the first two sets.
“We got off to a great start,” but in Game 3 we checked into the hotel,” Reiken said. “Fortunately, we put it back together in Game 4.”
