Garrick Vanderfin tallied 11 kills and Connor MacGillivray added 10 in the middle as the Bishop Diego boys volleyball team picked up a 26-24, 27-25, 25-20 victory over visiting Santa Ynez at the Brickhouse Wednesday.
Even though the season is just beginning, coach Joe Reiken said that it was an important match for the Cards since Santa Ynez in in the same division.
Big-hitting Pirates opposite Jon Bridgeman, who will play for UCLA next season, was “unstoppable” when he got a good set, according to Reiken. But the Cardinals’ tough serving kept Santa Ynez from giving him those sets consistently.
“He was really on, but I think we did a good job of disrupting their offense,” said Reiken.
Sean McIver dished out 29 assists for Bishop (3-1).
