Buena clouds San Marcos’ homecoming

San Marcos faced Buena in its Channel League opener Friday afternoon, suffering a pair of dual-meet losses. The girls team came close to defeating the Bulldogs, falling 82-88. The boys had more of a struggle, finishing the meet at 42-128.

The girls 400-freestyle relay race was a “nailbiter” after grabbing first place by only .11 seconds.  Coach Brian Roth said that Brittny Hummel, Parinda Sukavivatanachai, Zoe Kirker, Jade Wentz-Fitzgerald had not only qualified for CIF consideration, but also finished the fastest he had seen in five years with the Royals.

“It’s pretty encouraging this early in the season to see these kinds of results,” Roth said.

The Royals competed in their newly-renovated pool, their first home game in three years.  Coach Roth said “it’s just good to be home.”

The girls performed strongly in other events as well, with Emily Wheeler finishing first in the 100-butterfly at 1:03.90 and second in the 500-freestyle. Sukavivatanachai posted her best time ever in the 500-free, finishing at 5:46.27.

The boys team also set a few personal records, with Abel Hamilton posting his best times after placing third in both the 50-free and 100-free  at 25.07 and 54.47. Sam Boysel recorded two second-placed finishes in the 100-free and 200-free, at 53.99 and 1.56.59 respectively.

The Royals finished strongly in the dive meet, with Cate Wood placing first and Coral Kent taking second, while Cory Babinsky placed second in the boys division.

Coach Shannon Akin said her young team performed well in the first meet of the year.

“We were really excited for our first meet at our new pool,” Akin said. “They just really stepped it up.”

The Royals will face Oxnard next Friday.
