Aztecs spoil Gauchos’ weekend in tourney final

After starting the Gaucho Spring Invite 2-0 on Saturday, the No. 13 UCSB (10-5) women’s water polo team continued its roll early Sunday, cruising past the No. 19 UC San Diego (4-10) 8-5 at Campus Pool. However, in the evening the Gauchos met their match, losing in the championship game to No. 6 San Diego State (14-3), 3-7. Lizzie Rouleau led UCSB in points on Sunday with three.

During the first game of the day against UCSD, both teams took advantage of six-on-fives in the first quarter, leaving the score 2-1. UCSB goals came from Kristin Kulakowski and Gillian Morgan.

In the second quarter, the Tritons’ Jessica Tran put in two goals giving the UCSD the lead, but Claire Buchanan’spower play goal left the score an even 3-3 at half.

The game remained tight through the third as the Gauchos netted three goals via Rouleau, Buchanan and Jillian Wildron, but gave up a third goal to Tran and a second to Sydney Gstettenbauer, resulting in a score of 6-5.

UCSB pulled away in the fourth quarter, shutting out the Tritons while adding two more goals courtesy of Amanda Tipton and Rouleau.

In the Championship match-up against SDSU, Santa Barbara started off hot, taking a 2-1 lead, after goals from Gillian Morgan and Katie Kepner. However, after the first quarter the Gaucho offense stalled, and UCSB was held to just one goal through the next three quarters. In that same time the Aztecs were able to tally six more goals, two coming from Jenna Schuster, and seal the tournament championship victory.

The Gauchos next game is on Monday, Mar. 9 at Campus Pool where they will take on Bucknell at 2:00 p.m.
