Tony Alvarez assisted his uncle, Alejandro Alvarez, late in the second half Monday to lift the Carpinteria boys soccer team to a payback win at Fillmore, 3-2.
Yes, uncle. Alejandro’s older brother is Tony’s father, and the bloodlines connected at the right time for the Warriors in a game that could have easily slipped away.
Carpinteria struck first on a penalty kick by another Alvarez — Efrain — after Eduardo Contreras was fouled hard in the box in the 20th minute of the first half, but the Flashes answered five minutes later to tie it up.
“They answered right away and it kind of slowed us down. At half time I had to give them a pep talk about it and they responded,” said Carpinteria coach Daniel Torres.
Contreras scored six minutes after the break to put the Warriors back up, sending in a rocket from 25 yards out, but the Flashes once again fired back in a, well, flash, scoring a minute later on what Torres called “a silly goal” for the Warrior defense to allow.
Thankfully the nephew-uncle connection came through in the end, avenging Carp’s 1-0 home loss to Fillmore earlier in the season. The Warriors are now 7-1 in the Tri-Valley League.
“It was great to go to their house and beat them, but now we have to think about Oak Park on Thursday,” said Torres.
