Vaqueros benefit from Bauman’s bat, 16-2

Aaron Bauman ignited SBCC’s offense with a three-run homer in the first inning Monday afternoon and made a spectacular defensive play in the third for the Vaqueros, who went on to beat L.A. Mission 16-2 in a nonconference game at Sylmar.

Bauman, a sophomore from Mendocino, foiled the Eagles in the third after they got runners at first and second with one out. He leapt above the fence to make the catch in left field, then doubled the runner off second to end the inning. He also had an RBI double in the sixth to help SBCC improve to 4-1.

“We played well and this was our first error-free game,” said coach Teddy Warrecker. “That makes all the difference.”

Corey Krupp went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and four runs scored while Jeremy Baum had a three-run double in the ninth. The Vaqueros broke open a 4-2 game with 12 runs in the final four frames.

Freshman Zack Edgington (2-0) got the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He came in with two outs in the fifth and runners on first and second and got a flyout to end the threat.

The Vaqueros drew 10 walks and were hit by pitches five times.

SBCC travels to Saddleback for a three-game weekend series, starting with a rare night game (6 p.m.) on Friday.
