Vaqs to take on Cerritos in SoCal Regionals

SBCC was seeded 17th in the 18-team Southern Cal women’s basketball playoffs and will travel to No. 16 Cerritos on Wednesday for a first-round game at 7 p.m.

This is one of the strongest fields in history with every team having 20 or more wins for the first time.

“I’m excited,” said Vaquero coach Sandrine Krul, who beat the team she formerly coached, Moorpark, by 26 points (82-56) in a must-win game to get into the SoCal Regional last Saturday. “Cerritos is very athletic and very quick. We match up well and it’s going to be a great game.”

This is the fourth straight playoff appearance for the Vaqueros (22-12), who finished third in the WSC North with an 8-4 record. Cerritos (20-12) was first in the South Division of the South Coast Conference at 7-1.

SBCC beat Cerritos 72-58 on Dec. 7 in the fifth-place game of the Sequoias Tournament. Katie Randall led the Vaqueros with 24 points, 11 rebounds and four 3-pointers. Santa Barbara led 37-33 at the half before pulling away in the final 20 minutes.

If the Vaqueros win, they’ll travel to top-seeded Mt. San Antonio on Saturday.

L.A. Pierce, the WSC North runner-up, will play at Citrus on Wednesday while North champion Ventura has a bye.
