Sign-ups are being accepted for the 16th annual SBCC Golf Classic, which will take place on Monday, March 16 at La Cumbre Country Club. The four-person scramble gets underway with registration at 10 a.m. and a shotgun start at 11:15 a.m. The entry fee is $900 per foursome or $940 after March 3. Individuals can play for $225 or $235 after March 3.
The entry fee covers green fees, a luncheon, cart and tee prizes.
Last year, local banker Jeff DeVine sank a 51-foot putt to win the Chumash Casino $50,000 putt contest. The SBCC Golf Classic, which benefits nearly 400 student-athletes in 17 sports, is the athletic department’s biggest fundraiser. The event drew a sold-out field of 132 last year.
There will be awards in three flights this year — low gross, low net and mixed/women. In addition to the putting contest, there will be a Hole-in-One contest for a new car, Closest to the Pin, Long Drive and Beat the Ringer contests, featuring the 2008 State Champion Vaquero women’s golf team.
Diane Wootton is this year’s honoree. The native Santa Barbaran won tennis championships in New York, Santa Monica, Pasadena and Ojai in the 18-and-under division. In 1955, she captured the U.S. Junior Doubles Championship with Barbara Breit and was ranked No. 1 in doubles and No. 4 in singles.
Wootton helped start the women’s golf program at SBCC. She’s been playing golf for 35 years and has been tennis champion at Birnam Wood CC as well as the ladies’ golf champion 19 times.
