SBCC crushes Hancock by 38

A balanced offense and a relentless defense provided the foundation for SBCC’s 89-51 women’s basketball blowout of Hancock on Wednesday in the Sports Pavilion.

Katie Randall scored 17 points with Janelle Wong and Francesca DeAngelis adding 10 apiece off the bench. Twelve of 14 players got into the scorebook and 12 also had at least one steal as the second-place Vaqueros improved to 20-10 overall and 6-2 in the WSC North.

SBCC forced 40 turnovers and enjoyed a 56-34 rebounding advantage over the Bulldogs (2-22, 0-8).

Coach Sandrine Krul reached the 20-win mark for the third time in her five-year Vaquero career.

“It was nice to see Nicole (Flores) and Stephanie (Plaskoff), who normally don’t get a lot of playing time, come in and try to get each other the ball so they can score,” said Krul. “This is such an unselfish team. Josey (Piercey) was having a tough game but she was still cheering her teammates on. That’s what basketball is all about.”

Wong, a freshman from Dos Pueblos High, tallied all 10 of her points in the first half and also had a game-high 12 rebounds and five steals. Brittany Stephenson added eight points and nine boards while Lauren Wells scored all nine of her points in the second half.

SBCC jumped ahead 17-8 in the first nine minutes and finished the half with a 20-7 run, stretching the lead to 44-22 at intermission.

DeAngelis scored six straight points midway through the second half, boosting the margin to 40 points at 77-34 with 8:44 to play.

“It was nice to finally hold someone in the 50s,” said Krul, whose team has allowed 45 and 51 in its last two games. “They’re a good shooting team. They had troubles tonight and I’d like to think it was due to our defense.”

SBCC shot only 32.6 percent but took more than twice as many shots, hitting 31-of-95 to Hancock’s 13-42 (30.9 percent).

The Vaqueros will play their penultimate regular-season home game on Saturday against Cuesta with the tip set for 7 p.m.
