SBCC picked a bad time to go into a slump.
The Vaquero women’s basketball team couldn’t take care of the ball for the second straight game on Saturday at Ventura, the state’s top-ranked team, and the Pirates took advantage to hand SBCC its worst loss of the year, 99-61.
Santa Barbara (21-12, 7-4) didn’t shoot well and committed 32 turnovers, leading to 24 Pirate points. Ventura, which led 47-29 at the half, remained undefeated at 29-0 and 10-0 in the WSC North. On Jan. 21, the Vaqueros extended the Pirates to overtime before suffering an 84-81 loss at home.
Katie Randall led SBCC with 17 points while Nikki Graham and Andrea Owens had 10 apiece.
“We’re struggling and this should be happening at the start of the season, not the end,” said coach Sandrine Krul. “We need to finish 8-4 in conference.
“We’re on a two-game losing streak and we need to turn it around. We have to get back to doing what made us good — transition defense, running the ball and making our free throws.”
The Vaqueros complete the regular season on Wednesday at home against Moorpark, a team it lost to in double overtime on Jan. 24.
